After some time of back pain and stiffness, my husband decided to visit his doctor. It was just impossible to handle that sharp pain associated with bending or twisting of the back. When his doctor made some analysis he was able to confirm his diagnosis. He told us his problems are caused by DISH syndrome. I would like to know more about it.

DISH is diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. It is characterized by excessive bone growth along the sides of the vertebrae of the spine. DISH also involves inflammation and bone growth where tendons and ligaments attach to bone. For example, those places are elbow, knee and the heel of the foot. DISH (sometimes called Forestier’s disease) is considered a form of a degenerative arthritis. Stiffness is often worst in the morning and after long periods of sitting, which can also increase with wet weather. Some people with DISH might also have difficulties with swallowing and moving their necks. The exact cause of DISH is not known, but people who have been overweight since their childhood may be at greater risk of developing this disease. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen or high dose ibuprofen are often used to treat the inflammation of tendons and ligaments and the pain that occur with DISH syndrome.
