What are the symptoms of e. coli in the stomach? Also how long do the symptoms last and is medical attention needed?

Hello! Are you suspecting the presence of E. coli or you have been already found bacteria’s presence? In order to make diagnosis, a doc usually runs blood tests or takes stool samples.
Symptoms appear around 7th day after infection with bacteria. The first symptoms are severe cramps in the abdominal region, and just a few hours after, you get a bloody diarrhea. It is extremely important that you don’t take any diarrhea drugs, because they make it harder to get rid of the bacteria. Diarrhea leads further to dehydration and then you may feel really tired and sick. Next day you don’t suffer from watery diarrhea any more bit from bloody stools because the bacteria makes sores in the intestines. Bloody diarrhea may last for 2-5 days and you may have at least 10 bowel movements a day. Sometimes, a person experiences fever, nausea and vomiting.

There is no treatment. You need to take lot of fluids. In case you are over dehydrated, you may need to go to the ambulance to be given fluids IV.


The symptoms usually last for 7 days. Antibiotics do not work.
