My husband has had surgery in which he had part of the pancreas removed. Now he had trouble digesting and absorbing nutrients from the food. He needs to take enzyme tablets with meals to solve this problem. What are the effects of enzymes on pancreas? He started with Pancrelipase pills. I would like to know what side effects may occur from these pills.
Pancrelipase pill contains enzymes similar to those produced by a healthy pancreas. These enzymes will help him to digest the food, breaking it down into smaller chemical units that his body can use for energy. The side effects of pancreatic enzymes may occur like: diarrhea, nausea, mouth irritation, skin rashes, abdominal cramp or abdominal pain.
Oral supplements of digestive enzymes taken just before or at meal can assist digestion. Most supplemental enzymes are labile and will deactivate when exposed to stomach acid, but if they are taken just before or with a meal, some of the enzymes remain active, protected by the food.
