|
|
I couldn't figure out why i was gaining so much weight. I never put it on the Effexor but i was getting DEPRESSED about the weight gain as everything else in my life was getting better. I ran 6 to 8 miles a week, i tried watching carbs, fats, alcohol and yet i was 20 lbs more than a year ago. I have ALWAYS had a fast metabolism and told my wife i couldnt figure out why my metabolism had slowed.
I ran OUT of Effexor and got a refill but before i did, my therapist told me that i didnt seem to be having a problem going off and did i want to. I told her yes and mentioned the weight thing. She told me that many of her patients had gained weight on Effexor. Bottom line, i am just about off ( havent taken for 4 days and exercising, watching my foods and i LOST 6 lbs. Yeah, some water but i havent been able to lose this amount no matter how i try. And now i am HAPPIER and more motivated to lose weight and get back to my former fit self. IT MAKES YOU GAIN WEIGHT, LOTS OF IT. However, if you are depressed and need it, take it and get better first. Talk to your doctor and dont let this stuff stop you from getting your head better. Then worry about your weight. Thats where i am now. |

Although I'm not happy to hear people have gained weight taking effexor, it is a relief to see that I am not alone. I have exercised, done weight watchers etc.. with little or no results. I continue to exercise but it is very frustrating, I am 48, so I know that is part of the reason for weight gain, I need to take the Effexor so I guess the weight gain is a small price for having peace of mind. It still sucks though |

| I started off on a very low dose of Effexor XR along with Trazadone for sleep and Xanax as needed...Eventually my dose made it up to 300mg...My experiance was as follows...for the first few months didnt really notice anything physical...but things in my life slowly started to get worse a few months into the drug...break up..death...all those things...eventually on the 300mg i found myself with a constant cold sweat...always hot...and at this point it was dec....i lost 22 lbs from oct-dec...without hitting the gym..due to my depression and stress i think thats what may have caused all the weight loss but it may have been the effexor xr as well..its hard to tell...well ive stopped taking the effexor and have now gained back the 22lbs that i had lost...i am seriously thinking about getting back on the effexor to see if i can lose it again...not just for weight loss but feel myself getting back to where i was..i had one case of vertigo in july but other than that i don't think i experianced any withdrawl symptoms.. was on 300mg daily and i just forgot to get take it one day and just sorta just stopped...dont recall any complications...i guess everyone works different but i think it may also be what other medications you may be on...you also have to remember that a lot of people who deal with depression have no desire to eat..or do much of anything..i think effexor does really well with making you feel better and maybe with that comes eating more...doing more social things with your friends that may include dinners or gatherings with food...you have to take all those things into consideration...good luck everyone |

|
|
| I am so happy that I have found this website. I have been on Effexor XR for five years. I am now coming off because it is time. You should not be on something like this for so long. When I first started Effexor XR I was 140lbs, 5 10. Now today I am 181lbs, 5 10. I work out 6 days a week - usually 45 mins to 1 hour on the treadmill with weight training 3 - 4 days a week. I am on a high protein diet and try to watch what I eat. I actually went to my dr because I was feeling so lethargic and sleeping 10 - 12 hours a nite. I am so frustrated with this weight gain. This is the heaviest I have been in my life. I am going to turn 31 this August and do not want to continue on this "upward spiral". I used to sell Effexor XR and we always said that this drug is weight neutral. You have to remember that studies only go up to one year. If you have been on EXR for more than a year, there is no data supporting use over a year. I didn't really start gaining weight till about 3 and a half years ago. Just food for thought. I am going off now. |

Effexor does not make you gain weight!
If you are taking vitamins or other meds like Lyrica, THEY are the culprit!
If you are taking sleeping medication like Ambien, you may be "sleep eating"...!!!!
Cymbalta will trigger your appetite which will make you want to eat!
But Effexor is an appetite suppressor!
Please check the side effects on the meds you are taking and look at your vitamins! |

I am in the process of changing meds, I had been on Effexor XR 75mg. It was the insomnia that made me look for another drug, but of course in the process of changing meds, I have been re-reading about the side effects of these various ADs.
I am 41, 5'3" and a small frame, after 2 years on Effexor I have seen a progressive weight gain (52 kilos to 61 kilos and no sign of it stopping). It is not just a general weight gain, it is specifically around the front of my body...I look (and weigh) exactly as I did when carrying my 2 children...
I can tell you that I exercise, eat well, etc, and had not even contemplated that this weight may have been the medication (it is the only one I take), but reading the other generous posters experience (thank you Kim from '06) has been of some comfort. I would like to be able to post "the answer" to this problem, but unfortunately I haven't found it. |

I have gained weight on effexsor. I'm an aeorbic instructor, and excersize doens't seem to do anything. I wanted to know if there is a
special diet to help loose the weight and keep it off. |

um, no, it can make you gain weight. its different for everyone.
unless both times i have been on effexor i gained then started to lose when i stopped them was a coincidence.
Effexor may supress your appetite but still slows your metabolism because of the serotonin.
I know many people who HAVEN'T gained weight on the other meds you mentioned...its different for everyone. |
