: "A Multicenter, Double-Blind, Controlled Trial Comparing Oral Acyclovir to Oral 256U87 for the Treatment of Herpes Zoster in Immunocompetent Patients 50 years of Age and Older, Protocol 05" 1991-1992.
To pursue the latter possibility as well as attempt effective anti-CMV prophylaxis, Burroughs-Wellcome developed the BW 256U87 drug which breaks down into acyclovir once in the body but which permits a several-times higher concentration of acyclovir to be achieved in the bloodstream.
