  • ADHD stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in which a child cannot maintain attention and has poor impulse control
  • ADHD is a common behavioral disorder that affects an estimated 8% to 10% of school-age children.
  • Although ADHD is usually diagnosed in childhood, it is not a disorder limited to children -- ADHD often persists into adolescence and adulthood and is frequently not diagnosed until later years.
  • ADHD is not the result of "bad parenting" or obnoxious, willful defiance on the part of the child.
  • ADHD is characterized by a very short attention span, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity.
