- An acetylcholine receptor (abbreviated AChR) is an integral membrane protein that responds to the binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
- Acetylcholine is produced by the synthetic enzyme choline acetyltransferase which uses acetyl coenzyme A and choline as substrates for the formation of acetylcholine.
- Acetylcholine is acting like a traffic cop in the cortex, directing the flow of information -- the nerve signals -- along the cortical highways.
