- A short-acting drug for treating moderate to severe anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and is used as an adjunctive treatment for anxiety associated with moderate depression.
- Alprazolam works by slowing down the movement of chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced, which then results in a reduction in nervous tension (anxiety).
- The chemical name of alprazolam is 8-Chloro-1-methyl-6-phenyl-4H-s-triazolo [4,3-a][1,4] benzodiazepine.
- Alprazolam is a member of the benzodiazepine family.
- Alprazolam is habit forming.
- Long-term use and/or abuse may cause a physical dependence to develop along with withdrawal reactions during abrupt or rapid discontinuation.
