Facts

  • Angioedema is an at best an uncomfortable and disfiguring type of temporary swelling, and at worst a life-threatening one.
  • Angioedema is not always itchy and can sometimes be painful.
  • Angioedema is a problem that relates to the specialty of otolaryngology because its symptoms manifest most often in the head and neck, often in dramatic form.
  • Angioedema is a skin reaction similar to hives or urticaria.
  • Angioedema is associated with urticaria in about 40% of cases or occurs on its own in 10% of cases.
  • Angioedema is the swelling that usually occurs beneath the skin instead of on the surface.
  • The most common symptoms of angioedema are deep swelling around the eyes and lips and sometimes of the hands and feet.
