Previously, we found that only a fraction of de novo synthesized apoB is secreted; the remainder is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum where it is degraded.
In humans, apoB metabolism is believed to be principally determined by the liver, where apoB is both synthesized and catabolized.
These two research areas will be discussed separately: 1) Hepatic lipoprotein metabolism: ApoB is the major protein of VLDL and LDL lipoprotein particles and in epidemiologic studies, coronary artery disease risk is strongly correlated with plasma cholesterol and apoB levels.
