Epidemiology: BLV is a C-type retrovirus (single-stranded RNA encoded for reverse transcriptase).
BLV is a cancer-causing virus that infects cattle.
The laboratory antibodies we used to detect BLV proteins did not react with seven other viruses tested including five that commonly infect humans over long periods of time, suggesting that the reaction to BLV is specific.
Using the best tests available at the time, researchers weren't able to detect antibodies to the virus in the bloodstream of any human tested and so the USDA had concluded that, "BLV is not transmissible to humans.
1 Bovine Leukemia Virus BLV is a retrovirus of 80–100 nm in size that resides in blood lymphocytes where circulating antibodies are unable to neutralize it.
