Facts

  • The bile duct is a tube that connects the liver and the gallbladder to the small intestine.
  • The extrahepatic bile duct is joined by a duct from the gallbladder (which stores bile) to form the common bile duct.
  • Cancer of the bile duct is rare and is most prevalent in people ages 50 to 70.
  • Blood tests of liver function can show if the bile duct is or has recently been blocked by stones, but can be normal even if stones are present in the bile duct.
