Only conjugated bilirubin is water soluble and reacts directly.
In adults or older children, bilirubin is measured to diagnose and/or monitor liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or gallstones.
Bilirubin is produced by the normal breakdown of red blood cells.
Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment found in bile, a fluidproduced by the liver.
In the liver, most of the bilirubin is conjugated with glucuronic acid before it is excreted in the bile.
