Facts

  • A herpesvirus that occurs in healthy individuals without causing symptoms.
  • CMV infection of a pregnant woman may lead to congenital abnormalities in the newborn.
  • Usually, CMV is not harmful to people with health immune systems but in people with HIV or other illnesses that weaken the immune system, the virus can have serious health complications.
  • The most common illness caused by CMV is retinitis.
  • CMV is spread by person-to-person contact with body fluids (urine, saliva, blood, tears, semen, breastmilk, etc.
  • CMV is spread from person to person and has been known to spread in households with children or in daycare centers.
  • CMV may be treated with ganciclovir, foscarnet, or cidofovir.
