Facts
- A herpesvirus that occurs in healthy individuals without causing symptoms.
- CMV infection of a pregnant woman may lead to congenital abnormalities in the newborn.
- Usually, CMV is not harmful to people with health immune systems but in people with HIV or other illnesses that weaken the immune system, the virus can have serious health complications.
- The most common illness caused by CMV is retinitis.
- CMV is spread by person-to-person contact with body fluids (urine, saliva, blood, tears, semen, breastmilk, etc.
- CMV is spread from person to person and has been known to spread in households with children or in daycare centers.
- CMV may be treated with ganciclovir, foscarnet, or cidofovir.
