A herpesvirus that occurs in healthy individuals without causing symptoms.
CMV infection of a pregnant woman may lead to congenital abnormalities in the newborn.
Usually, CMV is not harmful to people with health immune systems but in people with HIV or other illnesses that weaken the immune system, the virus can have serious health complications.
The most common illness caused by CMV is retinitis.
CMV is spread by person-to-person contact with body fluids (urine, saliva, blood, tears, semen, breastmilk, etc.
CMV is spread from person to person and has been known to spread in households with children or in daycare centers.
CMV may be treated with ganciclovir, foscarnet, or cidofovir.
