- Chlamydia is one of the most widespread bacterial STIs in the United States.
- Chlamydia is the name of several types of bacteria.
- How does someone get chlamydia? Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact (primarily vaginal or anal) with an infected person.
- Among the more than 20 STDs that have now been identified, chlamydia is the most frequently reported, with an estimated 4 million new cases each year.
- Chlamydia is easily confused with gonorrhea, another STD.
- Chlamydia trachomatis can cause prostatitis and epididymitis in males and cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), premature birth, ectopic pregnancy, newborn eye (tracoma) or lung infection in females and infertility and urethritis in both genders.
- Chlamydia trachomatis causes symptoms like vaginal discharge and odor, constant lower abdominal pain, pain during urination, pain during sexual intercourse but is also more than often asymptomatic.
