- Clotrimazole is an anti-fungal medication related to fluconazole (Diflucan), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), and miconazole (Micatin, Monistat).
- Clotrimazole can be used topically on the skin, inserted vaginally or allowed to dissolve in the mouth for local fungal infections.
- Clotrimazole is used for candida infections like jock itch and athletes foot, and to treat thrush infections of the esophagus and mouth.
- Chemicaliy, clotrimazole is 1-(a-Chloro, a, a-diphenylbenzyl) imid-azole, with the empirical formula C22H17ClN2 and a molecular weight of 344.
- Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that inhibits the growth of pathogenic yeasts by altering the permeability of cell membranes.
