Facts

  • Colonoscopy is a procedure that enables a doctor to examine the lining of the rectum and colon by using a lighted, flexible tube (colonoscope) inserted into the rectum.
  • Colonoscopy is nearly always done with sedation and painkillers because it would be uncomfortable without.
  • More accurate than a barium enema x-ray and much simpler than exploratory surgery, colonoscopy is a safe and highly effective diagnostic technique.
