type of acute or chronic skin reaction in which sensitivity is manifested by reactivity to materials or substances coming in contact with the skin; may involve allergic or non-allergic mechanisms.

  • Contact dermatitis is an itchy skin condition caused by an allergic reaction to material in contact with the skin.
  • Occupational irritant contact dermatitis is an inflammation caused by substances found in the workplace that come in direct contact with the skin.
  • Irritant contact dermatitis is usually treated with the following: Chemical burns are usually flushed with water followed by use of antidote or specific remedy against the particular toxic chemical.
  • Irritant contact dermatitis is the most common occupational skin disease, usually resulting from toxic reactions to chemical irritants such as solvents and cutting fluids.
