  • Cortisone is one type of corticosteroid.
  • Cortisone is an important therapeutic drug which is used to fight many ailments ranging from Addison's disease to rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Cortisone is classed as a glucocorticoid with cortisol and corticosterone; its effects include increased glucose release from the liver, increased liver glycogen synthesis, and decreased utilization of glucose by the tissues.
  • Cortisone is a steroid hormone naturally produced by one's adrenal glands.
  • The synthetic cortisone is designed to act more potently and for a longer period of time (days instead of minutes).
  • Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication. It relieves pain by treating the inflammation but it is not a painkiller.
  • Some common reasons for a cortisone injection are Shoulder Bursitis, Arthritis, Trigger Finger, Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
  • Some cortisone injections can be painful.
  • The most common side-effect is a 'cortisone flare,' in which the injected cortisone crystallizes and causes a brief period of pain worse than before the shot that may last for a day or two. This side effect can be treated by icing the injected area.
