Facts
- Cryosurgery is a procedure in which abnormal body tissues (sometimes referred to as lesions) are destroyed by exposure to extremely cold temperatures.
- Cryosurgery is a surgical procedure that uses freezing to destroy abnormal cells.
- Cryosurgery is used to treat tumors, control pain, and control bleeding.
- Cryosurgery works by introducing the cold through a probe with liquid nitrogen circulating through it. The diseased tissue is destroyed by being cooled to below -20 degrees Celsius while procedures used to control pain or bleeding involve cooling to a lesser degree to prevent tissue damage.
- Side-effects of cryosurgery for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia include cramping, pain, or bleeding. When used to treat skin cancer, cryosurgery may cause scarring and swelling. Cryosurgery can also damage nerves and lead to loss of sensation and rarely loss of pigmentation and loss of hair in the treated area. When treating tumors of the bone, cryosurgery may lead to the destruction of nearby bone tissue and result in fractures.
- In rare cases, cryosurgery may interact badly with certain types of chemotherapy.
