Facts (generated by robot; please edit if you find it inaccurate)
- Desulfovibrio is known as a sulfate reducing bacterium, which has put it to the forefront of biological research.
- But Desulfovibrio is not a photoautotroph; its a chemoautotroph.
- Isolation of Desulfovibrio is facilitated by using the anoxic lactate-sulfate medium with ferrous iron incorporated into the culture.
- The hydrogenase content of Desulfovibrio is exceptional in the sense that it is the only known organism possessing both types of hydrogenase, it therefore gathers inside a single cell the combination of the various functions carried out by hydrogenases in several microorganisms.
- During this growth Desulfovibrio is able to reduce metals enzymatically such as manganese(IV), iron(III), technetium(VII), and particularly uranium(VI), and thus render the metal insoluble.
