- Doxycycline is an antibiotic medicine belonging to the class called "tetracyclines".
- Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic synthetically derived from oxytetracycline and is available as doxycycline monohydrate; doxycycline hyclate; doxycycline hydrochloride hemiethanolate hemihydrate; and doxycycline calcium for oral administration.
- Doxycycline is indicated for the treatment of the following infections: Rocky mountain spotted fever, typhus fever and the typhus group, Q fever, rickettsialpox, and tick fevers caused by Rickettsiae.
- Doxycycline is also highly effective against a wide variety of zoonotic infections; in a recent outbreak of plague in India, it was used for both prophylaxis and treatment.
