Facts

  • When a man complains of scrotal pain, acute or chronic epididymitis is far and away that most common diagnosis.
  • Epididymitis is usually a secondary bacterial infection that is triggered by a range of conditions, such as urinary tract infections or sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Epididymitis Presentation: An adult male complains of dull to severe scrotal pain developing over a period of hours to a day, and radiating to the ipsilateral lower abdomen or flank.
  • Epididymitis is a painful inflammation of the epididymis, a tube that is 5-7 meters long and attached to each of the testicles inside the scrotums.
  • Acute epididymitis usually causes swelling of the scrotum, pain in the testicles, and a fever that could last up to 6 weeks duration.
  • Chronic epididymitis results from several episodes of untreated acute epididymitis.
