Facts
- a hormone and neurotransmitter, also called adrenaline.
- It is important in the response to stress and partially regulates heart rate and metabolism.
- Epinephrine is released from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal gland.
- Epinephrine is produced continuously in small amounts by the adrenal glands, but when the body is threatened in times of excitement, danger, or emotional stress, the brain sends messages to the adrenal glands, which respond by increasing epinephrine production.
- Norepinephrine is the primary neurotransmitter in the sympathetic nervous system (controls "fight or flight" reactions) and is also found in the brain.
