any of several acute conditions ranging from mild to life-threatening that result from eating food containing toxins or pathogenic microorganisms.

Facts

  • Food poisoning is an illness that results when you eat foods contaminated by harmful organisms, such as bacteria, parasites, or viruses.
  • Bacteria related food poisoning is the most common, but fewer than 20 of the many thousands of different bacteria actually are the culprits.
  • Food poisoning is a term used for any illness of sudden onset, usually with stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea, suspected of being caused by food eaten within the previous 48 hours.
  • It generally reveals itself within 4 or 24 hours of the poisoned food being eaten
