Facts
- Gallstones are solid masses or stones made of cholesterol or bilirubin that form in the gallbladder or bile ducts.
- Gallstones vary in size from as small as grains of sand to as large as golf balls.
- They may cause pain in the upper quadrant of the abdomen or they may be clinically silent.
- Gallstones are more common in people who are obese, who overeat or lose weight rapidly through extreme diets.
