HPV is extremely common.
HPV is important because the abnormal tissue caused by some types of the virus can lead to cancer of the female organs.
Genital HPV is passed on through genital contact such as vaginal and anal sex as well as skin to skin contact.
Papilloma means a growth or wart, which is why HPV is also known as the 'wart virus'.
Human papillomavirus includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted.
