  • HPV is extremely common.
  • HPV is important because the abnormal tissue caused by some types of the virus can lead to cancer of the female organs.
  • Genital HPV is passed on through genital contact such as vaginal and anal sex as well as skin to skin contact.
  • Papilloma means a growth or wart, which is why HPV is also known as the 'wart virus'.
  • Human papillomavirus includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted.
