Broader Terms

In terms of reliability, hardness is one of the better physical properties for minerals.
In metallurgy hardness is defined as the ability of a material to resist plastic deformation.
What rockhounds speak of as hardness is more accurately described as resistance to abrasion.
The Shore hardness is measured with an apparatus known as a Durometer and consequently is also known as 'Durometer hardness'.
Pencils are pushed into the sample and the coating hardness is identified by the trace generated.
