tissues that govern the rhythmic occurrence of the heart; in the human heart, the cardiac rhythm normally takes its origin at the sinoatrial node, microscopic collection of atypical cardiac muscle fibers (Purkinje fibers) at the junction of the superior vena cava and the right atrium.
