Facts

  • The medical term for hives is urticaria (say: ur-tuh-kar-ee-uh).
  • A common form of allergic reaction that causes raised red skin welts.
  • Hives go away usually within 24 hours.
  • In some cases, the cause of the hives is an allergen such a food or drug.
  • One hallmark of hives is their tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours.
  • In about one third of cases, the cause of hives is unknown.
