deficiency of thyroid gland activity; characterized by decreased basal metabolic rate, fatigue and lethargy, sensitivity to cold, and menstrual disturbances; untreated it progresses to myxedema; in infants severe hypothyroidism leads to cretinism.

Facts
- Hyperthyroidism is a disorder characterized by under-production of the thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.
- The diagnosis of hypothyroidism is confirmed by finding very low levels of thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) in the blood.
- Hypothyroidism is a disorder of the thyroid gland, which is the butterfly-shaped glandular organ located in the neck just below the voicebox.
- When the production of thyroid hormone decreases below the normal body's need, the condition is referred to as hypothyroidism.
