- IBS is also called functional bowel syndrome, irritable colon (the large intestine is also called the colon), spastic bowel and spastic colon.
- IBS is a functional bowel disorder of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and discomfort accompanied by alterations in bowel function, diarrhea, constipation or a combination of both, typically over months or years.
- IBS is a physical, not psychological disorder characterized by lower abdominal pain (spasms or cramps) or discomfort, diarrhea, constipation (or alternating diarrhea & constipation), gas, bloating, and nausea.
- IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms.
- IBS is generally diagnosed on the basis of a complete medical history that includes a careful description of symptoms and a physical examination.
