Scope Note

recurrent multisystemic infectious disease caused by a spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted chiefly by Ixodes ticks; it is a disease with early and late cutaneous manifestations plus involvement of the nervous system, heart, eye, and joints in variable combinations.

  • Lyme disease is a disability disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorfei
  • Lyme disease is an infectious disease (a disease caused by an outside agent) that affects the skin first, then the joints, the nervous system and, if untreated, eventually other organs.
  • The vaccine should be considered for people in this age range who live in areas where Lyme disease is a problem, and who work or spend leisure time in wooded, brushy, or overgrown areas where ticks live.
  • The first stage of Lyme disease is called early Lyme disease.
