Facts
- "It is essential that the morning-after pill is available promptly if a female feels there is a pregnancy risk, but it is also very important that it continues to be seen as an emergency measure rather than an alternative to using contraception as a matter of routine."
- The morning-after pill is a hormone-based preparation (it can contain oestrogens, oestrogen/progestogens or only progestogens) which, within and no later than 72 hours after a presumably fertile act of sexual intercourse, has a predominantly "anti-implantation" function.
- Another very important use of the morning after pill is after sexual assault.
- The morning-after pill is made available without a prescription.
- The morning-after pill contains high doses of the hormones found in regular oral contraceptive pills which, when taken after unprotected intercourse may prevent pregnancy from occurring.
- There are three ways by which emergency contraceptive pills may work: by preventing ovulation, by prevention sperm from reaching the egg and by preventing implantation.
