  • Mucus is a slippery fluid produced by the membranes that line certain organs of the body such as the nose, mouth, throat, and vagina.
  • Cervical mucus is a jelly like substance produced by minute glands in the cervical canal.
  • Mucus is often noticed on underclothing, where it will have dried slightly causing some alteration in its characteristics.
  • Mucus serves to clean and protect certain parts of the body.
  • Mucus is composed of various inorganic salts, desquamated cells and leucocytes.
  • In lungs, mucus traps foreign particles that enter the nose during normal breathing. It also prevents tissues from drying out.
