  • Ovarian cancer is cancer in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs located in the pelvis.
  • Ovarian cancer is staged according to the AJCC/TNM System.
  • Ovarian cancer is cancer that begins in the ovaries.
  • The life-time risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1/70 or about 25,000 new cases each year.
  • Ovarian cancer is very deadly, but it is NOT silent.
  • The symptoms include persistent abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling and bloating, urinary urgency and pelvic discomfort or pain.
  • There are three basic types of ovarian tumors. Depending on where in the ovary they form, they are divided into: epithelial tumors that develop within thin layer of tissue that covers the ovaries; germ cell tumors that occur in younger women and form in the egg-producing cells of the ovary; and stromal tumors that form in the estrogen- and progesterone-producing tissue that holds the ovary together.
