PCOS is a condition in which cysts in the ovary interfere with normal ovulation and menstruation.
Syndrome associated with the metabolic syndrome, obesity, and hyperandrogenemia in young women.
PCOS is a disorder in which the ovaries produce an excess amount of male hormones (androgens), and ovulation does not occur regularly.
Although the underlying cause is not well understood, PCOS is generally characterized by an excess production of androgens (male hormones - usually testosterone), anovulation and amenorrhea, and by a varying degree of insulin resistance.
Because no exact cause for PCOS is known, a cure for PCOS is currently not available.
PCOS is estimated to affect between 5 and 10 percent of women of reproductive age, thus making it the most common hormonal disorder among women in this age group.
PCOS is diagnosed by clinical history and a physical exam looking for menstrual irregularity, and excess, abnormal hair growth or acne.
