Facts

  • PCOS is a condition in which cysts in the ovary interfere with normal ovulation and menstruation.
  • Syndrome associated with the metabolic syndrome, obesity, and hyperandrogenemia in young women.
  • PCOS is a disorder in which the ovaries produce an excess amount of male hormones (androgens), and ovulation does not occur regularly.
  • Although the underlying cause is not well understood, PCOS is generally characterized by an excess production of androgens (male hormones - usually testosterone), anovulation and amenorrhea, and by a varying degree of insulin resistance.
  • Because no exact cause for PCOS is known, a cure for PCOS is currently not available.
  • PCOS is estimated to affect between 5 and 10 percent of women of reproductive age, thus making it the most common hormonal disorder among women in this age group.
  • PCOS is diagnosed by clinical history and a physical exam looking for menstrual irregularity, and excess, abnormal hair growth or acne.
