- Ringworm is a skin disease that is not caused by worms, but by fungus.
- It causes itching and ring-shaped patches.
- Ringworm is contagious and is easily spread from one person to another.
- Ringworm is common because it is very contagious.
- The fungi responsible are called "dermatophytes," meaning "plants that live on the skin" thus the more correct term for ringworm is "dermatophytosis".
