Why call it Self-inflicted Violence? SIV is a descriptive term that does not suggest a specific intention for the behavior.
The aim of SIV is to teach you about the handling characteristics of your wing at the edges of its flight envelope.
SIV is more common than you might think with roughly 1% of the general population engaging in these behaviors (and this is likely to be greatly underestimated).
Because SIV is closely related to feelings of lack of control and overwhelming emotional states, placing someone in a setting that by its nature evokes these feelings is very likely to make matters worse, and may lead to an incident of SIV.
