  • Sepsis is the body's response to infection.
  • The presence of various pus-forming and other pathogenic organisms, or their toxins, in the blood or tissues.
  • It is characterized by the presence of two or more of the following features: Temperature >38C or 90/min Respiratory rate > 20/min or PaCO2 12 x 109/l
  • In the United States, sepsis is the leading cause of death in non-coronary intensive care units.
  • Sepsis is thought to occur when poisons from bacterial infection interfere with the cells.
  • a life-threatening blood infection characterized by low blood pressure.
