period of rest for the body and mind during which volition and consciousness are in partial or complete abeyance and bodily functions are partially suspended; a behavioral state marked by a characteristic immobile posture and diminished but readily reversible sensitivity to external stimuli.

- Sleep is a natural and periodic state of rest during which consciousness of the world is suspended.
- It is a period of intense brain activity often associated with dreams.
- Sleep proceeds in cycles of REM and NREM phases. In humans, this cycle lasts 90 to 120 minutes. In REM phase the brain is active and the body inactive, and this is the time when most dreaming occurs.
- Sleep is a dynamic time of healing and growth for organisms.
