Scope Note

surgical procedure consisting of the anastomosis of the stomach or intestines; the stomach is bypassed by transecting high on the body and the resulting proximal remnant is joined to a loop of the jejunum in an end-to-side anastomosis; anastomosis of the proximal part of the jejunum to the distal portion of the ileum bypasses the nutrient-absorptive segment of the small intestine; both are frequently used to treat morbid obesity.
