Since the sunflower is native from America, this "fact" has been used as proof that the book was written in the early 1500's---and not in the late 1400's, as the handwriting would otherwise indicate.
For farmers not intending to grow it, the sunflower is considered a noxious weed.
The sunflower is not actually a flower, but is a large cluster of flowers, a structure called a head or capitulum (an inflorescence).
Sunflower is a major source of vegetable oil in the world.
The Common Sunflower is a typical member of the Asteraceae, one of the largest and most successful families of plants.
