In comparison to open synovectomy, with no recurrence of synovitis, arthroscopic synovectomy is less radical and does not involve the fibrous capsule.
After two to three years, the result of a synovectomy is dependent upon the course of the general disease activity and not the surgery.

The procedure known as radioactive synovectomy is an efficacious and widely used technique to treat this condition.
It has not been determined whether arthroscopic or open synovectomy is better and whether a preoperative arc of flexion of >90 is an important prognostic factor.
