• The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland.
• The thyroid gland is situated at the front of the throat, below the larynx (Adam's apple), and comprises two lobes that lie on either side of the windpipe.
• The major thyroid hormone secreted by the thyroid gland is thyroxine, also called T4 because it contains four iodine atoms.
• The thyroid helps regulate growth and metabolism.
