- A period, or menstruation, marks the beginning of the process by which the uterus, or womb, prepares itself for pregnancy.
- Menstruation is the monthly flow of blood when pregnancy does not occur. This flow comprises about two-thirds of the endometrium and blood, often including the unfertilized egg or unimplanted embryo.
- Suppression of menstruation is a viable option for women today that it can be easily attained through the use of birth control pills.
- Painful menstruation is the leading cause of lost time from school and work among women in their teens and 20's.
