Scope Note

column of bones and cartilage that extends from the base of the skull to the pelvis, enclosing and protecting the spinal cord and supporting the trunk and head.

  • Spine consists of series of vertebrae forming the axis of the skeleton and protecting the spinal cord.
  • There are 4 distinct regions of the spinal column - the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions. Each of these distinct regions contain a different number of vertebrae which are structurally unique.
