Hello! I am in the 7th month of pregnancy, and am thinking of having an epideral or not. It is said that it relieves pain while labor, but I didn’t hear if it causes any complications or if it could harm the baby.

Hi there! Epidural anesthesia is safe for the baby. You may have some complications like: a drop in blood pressure; allergic reactions to the medication; a true spinal block; and, occasionally, slowing labor for a short period of time. This is how an epidural is done: A doctor places a needle between the vertebrae into epidural space in the spine. Medication is then placed into this space. A small catheter is threaded through the needle into the space and the needle withdrawn. The catheter is left in placed and taped so that it does not move. An epidural relaxes the pelvic muscles and the nerves are bathed in the local anesthetic medication which causes insensitivity to pain. You will still feel the pressure of the contractions and the urge to push.
