epiglottis got damaged while receiving radiation therapy?

Hi, my mother is 68 years old and it couple of months ago some changes occurred on her tongue in form of ulcers that became wider each day. Also there were some whitish layers on the tongue. She was diagnosed with tongue cancer and affected part of the tongue has been removed. But it seems like epiglottis got damaged while receiving radiation therapy. Is that possible?

Yes unfortunately, it is very possible. Quite often, the effect of radiation heals the carcinoma, but it also destroys the healthy surrounding cells (which is a flow of radiation treatment). So the surrounding tissue becomes damaged. In your father’s case, epiglottis got damaged and he will probably have to undergo symptomatic therapy.
