I have induced asthma symptoms during exercise, like cough and slight shortness of breath. Is that normal?

Yes, this is normal (if you are asthmatic!). Usually this happens when air in the gym is dry. Use your medication (inhaler) before and during training if necessary, it will widen your respiratory system. It will also relax and rhythmic your breathing, which has essential meaning for maintaining steady heart rate during exercise.
